The Way of Creativity

“Our creative intuition, fused with the work of the Spirit of God, can become the deepest seat of knowledge, from which our making can flow.”

- Makoto Fujimura

In 2025, I read three books on creativity that completely altered how I viewed a very important question — “what it means to BE an artist.” These books included The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, The Creative Act by Rick Rubin, and Art and Faith by Makoto Fujimura.

From the wisdom of these authors, I learned that we are all truly born as artists. Creativity is simply a lens through which we view the world. It can bring laughter, joy, healing, and breakthrough. Once I had finished the first chapter of The Artist’s Way, I began journaling three pages a day, writing down my dreams, notes, and visions for the future. From this process, Vital Foods, was born.

Creativity is a way of living, applicable to everyone, regardless of their occupation or passions. Art is just as valuable to the work of a surgeon as it is to the work of a painter or musician. The surgeon can create a beautifully intelligent surgical plan, just as the painter can envision a landscape. Each unique in their own manner.

Author Julia Cameron writes on the importance of shifting our belief systems about creativity, as it is easy to get caught up in the misconceptions. For example, I used to view an artist as the one who struggles financially, lacks structure and time management skills, and presents as scatterbrained. However, I have learned that this is not always accurate.

An artist can be well organized, financially stable, relationally rich, and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Artists present in many different forms. However, society has programmed us to move away from our creative, authentic self to fit into the mold of the machine. But what if efficiency and productivity are not as crucial as we have made them to be — and they most definitely are not as enjoyable.

So I will ask you this — what if living as an artist actually provides more abundance, freedom, and genuine success than you could ever imagine?

& what if the way of the artist is what allows you to unfold into who you were created to be?

Creativity is transformative and expansive in nature, helping us to grow through experience and shared stories.

Creativity bridges the spiritual realm with the physical and material, teaching us to operate from a place of faith. It helps us return to our original design by connecting us to our Creator - the very source of our imagination!
